The Faces of Gettysburg: Photographs from the Gettysburg National Military Park Library
Published in Paperback by Rank & File Pub (February, 1998)
Authors: JoAnna McDonald and Johanna McDonald
Average review score:

The Faces of Gettysburg-Awesome!
This is a wonderful book that originated from the idea of the Wall of Faces at the Gettysburg Visitors Center. The Gettysburg Nat. Mil. Park Library has received over 500 images donated from families and private collectors. This book(album) contains 200 of these images. Some of the images arrive with a bit of history or family lore. The book is divided into three parts: July 1, July 2, and July 3. The images are arranged into alphabetical order and display the soldiers name, rank, unit, age(some)and the final result of the individual)survived, killed, wounded or captured.) Most of the images show amazing detail and I enjoyed studying the uniforms, weapons and gear that the soldiers actually carried onto the battlefield. Also on page 52 is my distant cousin,Capt.Charles A. Phillips from Salem, MA. who suvived to become an attorney after the war.

Familiar Mysteries: The Truth in Myth
Published in Hardcover by Replica Books (May, 2001)
Authors: Shirley Park Lowry and Shirley Park-Lowry
Average review score:

Great introduction!
This is the best introduction to the field of mythology that I've come across.

Ms. Lowry starts off by defining what myths are, and what they do. She discusses how they provide personal guidance, support (or challenge) the social order, how they provide us with a sense of physical order, and how they help us face life's mysteries. She differentiates myth, legend, and folktale, and outlines the "diffusion vs. archetype" argument. The following sections cover the heroic pattern, the tension between chaos and an ordered cosmos, and the mystery of death. This is not merely an anthology of snippets from around the world; she discusses in-depth the underlying motifs, and the disguises they take on as they appear in different ages and cultures. The breadth of her scholarship is impressive...she's equally comfortable with Theseus and Gilgamesh, Horus and Beowulf. More than just a dry anthology, this book challenged me, taught me a great deal, and made me want to learn more. And you can't ask for much more than that.

She knows Yellowstone
We've been to Yellowstone several times with our kids, and I wish we had this guide with us!

Robin Tawney knows Yellowstone well, and provides interesting, fun and useful information about the park. I'm sure we would have had a better time and not been as lost as we were if we had her guide in our back pack.

A fence around the cuckoo
Published in Unknown Binding by Viking ()

Average review score:

An enchanting autobiography of growing up in New Zealand
This is an enchanting book about growing up during the depression in New Zealand's rain forest. The authors father was in the lumber business and stationed with his family in the forest. Ruth grew up surrounded by interesting people, Maori friends, and nature. The book kept me engrossed during a 12 hour plane trip.. I was swept away to another time and place.

Fenway Park: Legendary Home of the Boston Red Sox
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (October, 1992)
Authors: John Boswell and David Fisher
Average review score:

A very informative, very fun book about Fenway and the Sox
This book is fantastic. It is a photographic history of Fenway and the Sox. One of the things I liked best are the different photos of Fenway and its players throught the years that I havent seen elsewhere E.g: A photo of the ground breaking ceremony, side by side shots of the entrance (1912 and 1991). Ted pitching, the park set up as a football field (for the Patriots) and Boggs looking at a called strike. The text is excellent with lots of historical facts. Now I'll get to the best part. Remember pop-up books as a kid. Well this book has a detailed pop-up model inside. 1 inch=80 feet. It's all there; The Wall, the numbers, the bowling alley, and even the Citgo sign. This book will amaze the Fenway Fan

Ferris Wheels: An Illustrated History
Published in Hardcover by Popular Press (December, 1992)
Author: Norman Anderson
Average review score:

The Ferris Wheel Bible!
This book is the ultimate authority on Ferris Wheels. The history of Ferris Wheels is comprehensive and has copious footnotes. The references go deep. There was one reference that caught my fancy, and after extensive searching, found that it is a reference in one library in England, and shows up no where else! The photographs are good, but not great. An excellent and detailed section on patents related to Ferris Wheels. Anderson has written a super 400+ page reference work. Strongly recommended.

Financing and Acquiring Park and Recreation Resources
Published in Hardcover by Human Kinetics Pub (June, 1999)
Authors: John L. Crompton and Mark Havitz
Average review score:

An excellent, up-to-date textbook.
This book is much improved over the old Howard/Crompton or Deppe texts. It is very apparent to me that the author has thoroughly researched his topic area. His emphasis on active financing rather than just budgeting is something which very much attracted my immediate attention. A few years ago, I took an independent study course on partnerships from Dr. Wilbur LaPage. Much of what Dr. LaPage was teaching about can be found in John Crompton's new book.
